In school I saw an adaptation of King Lear with the set production revised to evoke Gangland Dublin, with Cordelia's French army replaced with masked and camouflaged IRA men. But yeah, sure, THIS is suddenly a flagrant violation of Shakespeare's vision. Due to comments already ,stating racism. Then no true critique can be made about this production. If a critic were to give it a bad review, that person would be accused of racism. The other view to all of this is realism. Although Shakespeare didn't intend to write for any particular ethnic group, He lived in a totally white culture & as such his writings would have been with that in mind. So I can understand where some of the mixed feeling is coming from as I have heard & seen lots of comments about the sudden influx of people of colour in adverts, news, etc.
