If you didn't read the article and heard "you can have two sleeps!", you wouldn't consider waking up in the middle of the night to do chores and then going back to sleep for 2 or 3 hours before getting up at sunrise to be a good faith interpretation of the deal. My husband's mother, who was born in 1911 in the highland of Scotland, used to say to him that 'the hours before midnight are the most beneficial' when trying to encourage him to go to bed at a reasonable hour. He always thought it was a bit of an old wives tale - but now wonders if her advice was some kind of 'echo' from the time of two-sleeps!My guess is that the pattern would change between the light and dark nights. I once stayed in a cabin with a wood fire in winter.
